SparkViz is a construction project using an embedded PIC application (ArcGen) for building a tool to compare the spark plug arc quality (colour and strength) for a set of spark plugs over a variable RPM range.

Full construction details and user guide for this project can be found in the SparkViz Construction Guide.

Features:

  • Simultaneous spark firing on all four plugs
  • Variable RPM range from 60 rpm to 12000 rpm in steps of 200 rpm with linear rotary knob (eg 60,200,400,600,800,1000,1200,....,12000 rpm).
  • Manual and Automatic RPM mode switch. Manual RPM mode allows user to vary the RPM directly via the adjustable control knob. Automatic RPM mode continuously ramps the revs up and down from 600 rpm to the maximum preset RPM setting (manually set via control knob). Automatic mode is ideal for a hands free demonstration.
  • Powered from a 12V battery capable of delivering 5 amps.

How do you use it?

To use SparkViz with your spark plugs:
  1. Ensure SparkViz is switched off and disconnected from battery.
  2. Connect all four spark plugs to the HT leads and clip into position.
  3. Connect SparkViz to battery terminals.
  4. Switch on SparkViz
  5. Observe quality of arc as you vary the revs via the RPM knob (or switch to automatic ramp mode).
  6. Switch off SparkViz and disconnect battery connections.
  7. Remove spark plugs.

CAUTION: HIGH VOLTAGE

Due to the high voltage nature of the spark, SparkViz should be used with the same precautions, as you would take when handling the spark plugs and HT leads of a running engine. Always run SparkViz with all spark plugs fully connected and clipped to the base unit. Never run the unit with open stray ignition leads. Never touch the Spark Plugs or HT leads whilst running live. Only handle spark plugs when the unit is powered off. This tool must only be operated by persons familiar with the necessary safety precautions.

Left plug has uneven spark distribution due to wider gaps on two of the ground electrodes.
Also note triangular shape of centre electrode due to wear.
